My mate's misses put £20 of unleaded in his turbo diesel Renault Laguna.

It's now running nasty and hot, not surprisingly.

It's about a third full (so it's mainly petrol in the tank I guess).

Would it be ok to fill it up to the top with diesel and hope that dilutes it?

Or should he drain the tank (or get the AA to do it!) to get rid of all the petrol?

Will it have damaged it already?

Any advice greatfuly recieved - he's just off to his place with my siphon tube!

not sure on the damage but drain the petrol I supose if you try an run it on petrol it may try seize the pump so def get it out

DRAIN IT OUT NOW!!!!

put in loads of diesel and try it gently. If it runs OK then its probably OK if not then pump seals etc will have been damaged.

Im almost ashamed to own up but I did it myself a couple of years ago with a Diesel Zantia. Drained it all out AT ONCE and brimmed it with diesel and drove around slowly for a bit while praying to anyone who would listen. I got away with it, with no ill effects. Hope your mate is as lucky.

Petrol into diesel is not as nasty as petrol is less viscous that diesel, and hence will flow easily through the injectors, top right up with diesel m8

and then every 100 miles/ish top up again for about 3-4 top ups

wagons used to put so much petrol in to stop the diesel freezing, so your ok for the coming cold nights m8 lol, £20 won't cause you any sleepless nights m8;)

How many you had light weight :x: :D

Better draining it to be safe, diesel acts as a lubricant for the injection pump and injectors. petrol does the opposite and could *****x the pump. You would probably get away with a small amount of petrol but 20 quids worth is probably not much less than half a tank better to fork out to have the tank emptied than spend hundreds on a new pump.

Thanks gents!

He borrowed my siphon but bottled out, called the AA who took him to a garage and they drained it (and charged him £80!).

Thanks for all the advice.
