Bought a game for mine today...didnt realise how cr@p it was.(the puter..1g athlon,,, 512 ram), hard drive ok though and it does the net at a blinding speed thanx to broadband....

So I thought....must get a new one....Who has the best deal at the mo?

I know Dell are pretty good but who has the best package?

Want a fast plentium with loads o ram...not bothered about hard drive as this is replaceable...Oh, and I want a good graphics card. DVD r/w. not bothered about the 'free software'...(?)

Any ideas??

Old pc will be donated to charity.

I was reckoning 150 for the video card, 300 for motherboard and chip, but am not sure about it.

Built the last one (well this one! ) several years back now, bu I nkow thet there are some blinding deals about so thinking about it..?

I'd go for a radeon 9800 pro 128meg Iceq graphics card.

AMD Sempron 3100 (SDA3100AXBOX) 754pin 32Bit Processor

Asus K8V/GD SKT754 VIA K8T800 Motherboard

1 Meg DDR400 PC3200

£410 to your door. Nice setup.

It's probably more cost effective now to buy a package such as a Dell system,

but in a couple of years if you want to upgrade, you'll probably need to get a whole new system again.

At least self built allows you to keep some of your current hardware, and get a better system thats easier to upgrade later.

Sounds good, was a bit dissapointed with this AMD chip compared to a plentium though...as soon as I got it..... am running it on an ASUS motherboard though which aint too bad, but there is a prob with it and the USB ports not supporting my ADSL modem properly so I get the occasional shut off from the net...guess they have addressed that issue thogh..

Is that the price for the whole unit inc case?

If so that's a good price, if not do you need to take into account the cost of a new PSU?

Oh i think a bit more memory would be good :D

If you decide to build your own take a look at http://www.tomshardware.com to see if what your choosing is any good.

For pur money saving/performance I would go AMD every day for a home PC.

Only time I would go Pentium would be for a server that was being pushed at work.

i would get the intel p4 northwood core with the new chipset / pci express motherboard which is effectivley agp16x not sure if many graphics out at the mo tho

Toys R Us has got a pretty good deal on a 3.6Ghz Pentium system at the moment.

I would make your own. The new AMD motherboards allow you to run a Barton XP and is also able to take an AMD 64 too. So when they come down in price you can upgrade the chip to a 64bit one with out the hasstle of having to buy an new motherboard and maybe new memory too.

I think I will do a rebuild as you say...trouble is that I dont know a great deal about it, enough to get by I guess..

I WILL be seeking your advice,,Thanks all of you who took the time to respond. :hyper:

I used to build PCs for my use and for friends and family. I used to buy the bits from computer fairs which take place at sports halls and arenas around the country and offer loads of suppliers with huge discounts. I stopped a couple of years back because despite the good prices at computer fairs, the mail order boys that buy in bulk are far more competitive.

Obviously if you build yourself, you know will the machine inside and out, and know what decisions you made in terms of trading off cost and performance etc. However, there is nothing to stop you specifying your machine (even down to the make and model of sound card/graphics card etc) and having a supplier build it for you. You can still upgrade it yourself (bigger disk, processor, mnemory or other peripherals) whenever you feel the need. However it does mean that in the mean time you get the manufacturers warranty on all the components, but you get their warranty on the build (obviously check the small print).

Plus, there is more to building a PC than plugging it together. Just look at the benchmark tests in any "techy" PC magazine and see how similar spec machines perform differently. That level of tweaking is performed by relative experts and will be fixed by those same experts if you find that you are having problems (from games not running to unstable windows etc.).

I bought a Carerra SSC PC in the end (about 12 months ago) because my home build kept crashing when I was doing a friends wedding video. It was definitely a driver related problem, but I could not get to the bottom of it - even with help from far techier people than me. This is a fantastic piece of kit (use for Digital Video work and for music studio stuff) and looks pretty cool too not the usual beige monster!

Carerra's website lets you pick and choose components, warranty and delivery options, and updates the price at the bottom of the screen as you make your selections. Then when you ralise you have blown your budget, you can go and select smaller monitor, cheaper graphics etc uyntil you have a price and spec that suits. They aren't the cheapest but are highly recommended.

Not the shortest post in the world, but hope it helps.

Cheers

Rich
