I've got no hot water

Timer is set OK, the boiler is on, hot water tank appears to be warm but empty - turn the tap on and get a trickle for 10 secs then nothing.

WTF?

Hi Chris,

Do you know if it's a combi or normal conventional?

Sounds like a blocked cold feed pipe from the mst [main storage tank] into cylinder, source it and try hitting with hammer..........if nothing happens you will have to cut pipe out.

Most probably blocked at the tee piece

hope this helps

cheers

I dunno what type it is - never been into my heating specs! :D

There's a boiler on the wall in the kitchen and a hot water tank upstairs is all I know.

The pilot light is on on the boiler and as I said the water tank feels warm but it looks like it's not filling for some reason.

I had good plans for the shower this weekend too ;)

Hhhhmmmm looks like fun, it's all nicely hidden away at the back of a cupboard.

There's a couple of electrical valve type thingies and taps plumbed into a tangle of pipes so i don't know where to start.

How would a pipe get blocked?

It looks like it's all fairly new in the last 10 years or so.

I appreciate you are not getting any hot water out through the taps. If there is no water in the cylinder it should not get hot.

Chris, are you positive that the cylinder is not filling?

I can't hear it filling and there's nothing coming out of the hot tap.

Plenty of cold though.

Does the storage tank in the loft only supply the hot tank and the cold taps come direct from the mains?

If so it could be the tank in the loft not filling?

Got a Z engine to install this weekend so looks like I'll be using a kettle to get washed! LOL

Cold water is mains. cold water goes in through the boiler then on to your cylinder. the tank in the loft will be for your heating. unless it's a very old system.

in the airing cupboard do you have adrain cock near the bottom of the cylinder? it looks like this

have you got a pressurised hot water circuit or a vented hot water circuit, does the cylinder have a insulation jacket, whats it called?

Regards,

alex

when you say nothing coming out of the TAP is that single??

is water not coming from any of the taps in the house?

if your getting water from the other taps, its probably the valve in the tap

if it's all your taps ignore me lol

Sorry Tack, never read his post properly.

1. As said above are all your hot water taps the same?

2. If you have no flow out of the taps, that won't be you boiler. You have a blockage somewhere.

no probs mate. we still don't know if it's all the taps or just one. difficult thing to diagnose from southampton :)

ChrisC, from your description you have a convensional Y plan system,

There should be two header tanks in the loft one to serve the boiler if it requires water due to evaporation or after a drain down, the other is the gravity cold feed to the hot water cylinder. The indirect cold water will be the bigger of the two tanks, it may well be that the ballcock has stuck shut and so it has not refilled as you have used hot water from the cylinder, eventually your hot water cylinder level will drop below the level of the outlet pipe to your hot water taps and hence no water. It will still actually be quite full as water is drawn off the cylinder at the top ( warmest part) so, once below that level no more gravity feed. This is why the tank still feels warm

One point though the fill and expansion tank may actually be above the cylinder if it is an old design one ( more than 20 yrs) so check there too.

God the lot of you why not try hooking your washing machine cold hose to your hot and back feed the hot water system it could be an airlock start with simple stuff

the simple stuff IF its just the one tap, is a replacement tap valve at the massive cost of £1-50, but as he's not replied, he may have his finger stuck in a hole
