Excellent day today, lots of US muscle and hardly any Jap performance, but still excellent all the same. First time I've ever taken part in the 1/4's and I found out that there's alot more to it than it looks.

I did 5 runs in total.

300zx v Cateram (think that's the right spelling) WIN

Reaction - 1.047

1/4 Time - 13.530

Terminal - 105.708

300zx v fiat thing (16.037) WIN

0.780

13.688

117.924

300zx v Mini (520BHP 10.8 second 1/4) LOST

0.584

13.870

106.951

300zx v Focus st17 WON

1.214

14.190

(no terminal speed due to left lane terminal speed sensor broken)

300zx (me) v 300zx (garry) (both fried our clutches trying to start with a 5krpm load ) WON

0.851

14.667

(no terminal speed - left hand lane)

My best time was @ 13.5psi which was surprising as the more I raised the boost the harder it was to get a good start without too much slip. Hense the Terminal speed was faster but over time was down.

Thanks to Antf for lending me some cash for food (I left the wallet at home to save weight LMAO !).

Also, thanks to Garry for the helping me fry my clutch on our second run.

There is some video footage but probably won't be here for a few days.

Burnt head - stinky clutch :)

Wow, nice one Stu...

I'm a bit surprised you beat the Caterham by such a margin, but then I guess it's got at least one more gear change and he REALLY cocked up the launch!

If you listen to the engine he stayed bouncing off the red line for fooking ages. With a decent driver behind the wheel he would have kicked my butt.
Do you reckon the weight saving from the targas is more important than the extra drag?
Haven't got a clue ? I did it for the experience rather than the times. My targa's were off but they were also strapped away in the boot, so no weight saving there :). My car weights almost 2000kg due to the ICE and the bling so I don't think I'll bother with the weight saving aspect, I'll just pile more power on :).
You had pretty good launches there tho nice one... and that's a mighty mighty terminal speed
That terminal speed is suspect so if I got to Santa pod and get it again then I'll be convinced, until then too many people are doubting it for me to stand firm with it, so I'll say it was a computer error, until I can repeat it.
When you say there's more to it than there looks, what do you mean exactly? Clutch control? Or are there other gotchas?
far too much revs and the clutch will be slipping, too much revs and the wheels are spinning, with just the right amount at launch then you would get a good start but I was also getting spin at the top of 1st where my peak torque kicks in and also at the top of 2nd gear

Yeah, the Caterham "driver" needs a :slap:

In 1st you definitely have to use the throttle and the clutch subtly, not just on/off... and in mine at least 2nd gear is consistent and you can back off fractionally just when you know it's going to lose grip otherwise... but it's a lot to think about in 5 seconds!

BTW the maths says you should stay in first until redline if you can bring yourself to do it! You drop into much better torque in 2nd that way.
