Hi me is new to the Zed forum, but am a 200sx s14a owner.

I just bought a 300zxTTauto on 70K by auction, it's '91 import, all extras except for leather, which is apparently mint apart from one thing which I'll get to.

It hasn't been registered for the UK yet due to requiring an MOT, it has been converted & SVA certified, all import tax & vat paid.

The thing is, I haven't even seen it in the flesh and apparently it turns over, but doesn't spark up, starter fires, engine turns but won't spark up. The seller is a woman, who claims not to be savvy when it comes to car problems and just wants it off her hands.

So it could be anything from borked HT leads to knacked Ecu

I paid £1600 for it....

Am I a nugget? or do you think it's a worthwhile gamble?

It wont be the HT leads! ;) as it dont have any! as for the no spark i'd try another PTU first!

heh, yer same as my SR20DET, but I was just trying to illustrate it could be anything ;) from simple to horrible. what I need to guage is whats the worst

if it was worst case scenario for the engine, was it still a decent buy at £1600?

I can get hold of a PTU if you end up needing one.

Vijay

Sounds a bargain mate, even if the whole engine needs swapping - which I'm sure it wont. :duffer:

PTU (part of what zeds have instead of HT leads, distributor, etc ;) ) failure is common - could well be that. Not really that expensive to buy a new one. Vijay can get them for good £$£ I believe ;)

Cheers

I've been and seen the car as I live just down the road from the owner, story is that she bought it as a present for her husband-- this car was for sale in wales a few months ago with same problem(a little more about this later),the general condition of the car is good although the rear wing needs spraying and the back bumper need some attention to the laquer, the interrior is mint and normal series 1 grey tweed.

the car needs a steering rack gator, at least 2 tyres and a fog light for it's mot

and a speed convertor.

now the welsh bit-- or so I remember

the car was imported into liverpool nearly 12 months ago when it went on the boat it ran, when it came off it didn't. I had discussions with the last seller who was supposedly selling for a friend and didn't want electronic payment only hard cash--- if I remember correctly the woman paid in the region of 1400 plus 60 delivery

I was prepared to pay a max of 1300 so I didn't bid

please believe that this isn't sour grapes but I would hate for someone to get unstuck with one of these cars, I think to sort the car will cost no more than 1000

Pete :D

yep its a '90

steering gator doesn't explain why it won't start tho :/ i'm rank amateur, but I'll have a bona-fide mechanic with me when I go to pick it up.

tbh tho I'm really looking forward to it, as I was planning to get a pearl mint green paint job done once I got the kit I wanted on it. get it 100% and then sell my s14a and then buy lots of 'bits' for the Z with the money left over :D

Does anyone know of a good link for aftermarket headlights for the Z

I believe Luke from the Z centre is in the process of some new ones.

Vijay

Well it can be one of four things.

1) Spark - plugs, Coil packs, PTU, ECU, Wiring

I'd rule plugs and coil packs out straight away as it will still start up even on 4 cylinders.

2) Fuel - fuel pump, fuel pressure, injectors blocked.

Very rare that you have any problems with Fuel but still gotta check it.

3) Compression - maybe the inlet values are not seating right and you can't get enough compression once it starts it will run fine but if it's got to a state when it won't start due to inlet or zorst vales then you are taking a £1k+ to get it sorted. SE quote £2.2k for head rebuild.

4) Battery, if it click at all then there's not enough power to start, if it turns slowly then again still not enough power.

Could also be CAS related but I doubt it.

If you can do a compression test on the car, the results will tell you if it's worth 1,600. Good luck ;)
