Design engineer salary.

What's the going rate, per hour, for a design engineer. Assume I'll get questions "designing what', so let's make it broad, designing a machine, component, or software from conception to "finish".

I think that a ' designing what?' question is perfectly valid. I've got a mate who designs furniture on auto cad, been to university got the degree etc he gets around 22K. on the other hand i know a few engineering design engineers who get paid shit loads more, so you are going to have alot more specific when asking this sort of question, besides wouldnt a jobs forum be more appropriate for this sort of question?

I'd say about £20 per annum. Because why would anyone want something "different".

Surely everyone knows that we should all have the same taste and designing only really means creating, changing, improving or enhancing something.

Don't do it Peter your life wil never be the same :p

Not sure I should say cos you'll all know what stupid-extortionate money I'm on... for a job I mostly do in bed... or p*ssed.

I think our newest junior designer (newby scum tw@t!) started on something like 26Kpa. So something like that upwards, depending on skill, personality, and how much beer you can drink without falling over.

Yes and yes, just wanted a rough idea of what was the going rate

without being too specific, not that much up on computer forums , so asked here where there is a fair bit of engineering know how.

It is very difficult to design something "differrent or better than stock" usually a lot of man hours by some very good people have gone into the design of any product but if the product dosen't exist in the first place it makes things a little easier.

I dunno... I kinda think it's easier to improve on someone elses idea. It's hard work coming up with anything completely new. But then, how many ideas are new, rather than improvements of something else? A generic product can always be tailored to a more specific need, but to one person you might be improving it - to someone else making it worse.
