Please can anyone help me with the best route to take to Blackburn.

I'll be travelling from Grantham in Lincolnshire and am OK as far as north of Sheffield on the M1.

Yes I have looked at the map and I know where Blackburn is, but do i use the motorway, or do i go across country:confused:

I think it might be faster using the motorways M62, M61 and M65, or would it be more effective to use simple A roads. Now I do realise that in using the motorways I'm going to be clocking up a lot more miles and using a lot more petrol, so i can see benifits both ways.

So can anyone who is local to that area possible help me out here :)

Thanks in advance

Dave

I can tell you the FUN route which I always use, whichever car I'm in.

Off M1 at the A616 J35A - mind the average speed cameras (first in the country?)

[Actually I don't mind these - because they measure an average it means you can boot it past people to overtake, if you've been following at 40mph for a while...]

After a few miles you'll cross the A628 - head northwest up this. Now you've got MILES of tremendous moorland road all the way to Oldham. Have look at the map around Oldham / Ashton before you get there, otherwise you can end up getting very lost and coming out somewhere more like Stockport than Oldham. :-)

Oldham gets you onto the M60, round that anticlockwise (Or West and North / Liverpool), dive up the M66 when it filters off. This turns into the A56 and then you're pretty much there.

Across the M62 is probably a slower route full stop between 7am-10am and 4pm-pm or so because it's chocka all the way from Ferrybridge. It's certainly 20miles further round at all times and a bloody awful stretch of Mway. I know my colleagues who drive in here (Salford) from Sheffield and Rotherham both refuse to use the motorway.

Careful over the road right across the top of Saddleworth - it's a poor surface with adverse cambers so you can easily get caught out in a car with hard suspension (and careful after dark even in the summer, it's full of frost hollows and damp patches.)
