Yet again the Argentinians have had a go about us and the Falkland Islands.

They are now claiming that We've sent a nuclear sub to the area.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-16993391

When they invaded in the '80's the argies were convinced that we wouldn't retaliate. They were obviously wrong. But it was a very close call being able to assemble a fleet and send it to the Falklands to retake them.

I know that the political situation in Argentina is very different to the Junta that was in power at the time but do you think they may be thinking that we are again in situation of being unable to defend the islands?

We have no fixed wing aircraft in the fleet anymore. The Ark has been scrapped, Invincible went in 2005 and Illustrious has been converted to a helicopter carrier. The new carriers are not due to enter service until 2020. We have no long range Bomber capacity anymore. The army is heavily committed in Afghanistan and the government are cutting jobs from the MoD like there was no tomorrow. And finally, I doubt the Americans would publicly come out on our side as they are worried their relations with the South American countries

With all this in mind, I'm thinking that they might just have another go.

What do you think?

i was down there for 5 years and they will be hard pushed to take it again without heavy losses. it does wind me up that they are sabre rattling again. there is gas and oil down there so no big surprise though.

believe me, there losses on day one would be substantial though.

It is much better defended now, which is good to know. And yes they would take huge losses trying again. iirc last time it was the Governor of the Falklands that ordered the troops to stand down. Otherwise they would have kept fighting till the last man.

Why didn't the the UN just tell them....

Well last time you attacked unprovoked..... what do EXPECT the English to do ?'

End of Story

If we started to invade something that didn't belong to us the UN would be down our necks in a second. If someone else tries to invade something that belongs to us, nothing happens. GB always seems to be the fall guy :(

It is a worry with us being so heavily over committed in Afghanistan. but one would hope that if the Argies did try to invade again then Obama would lend a hand.
