As a dad of 2 and both myself and my wife work, I can tell you that the only benefit you'll receive is child Tax credit which is hardly anything!

Because your household earns more than 14k a year your not entitled to any other benefit :( That's how it is in Wales and I don't think it's any different in England?

well she should get maternity pay, you can also claim working tax credits and when baby is here family tax credits.

But check anyway as its wage dependant, word of warning about the tax credit system, if your wages change, let them know in writing and keep copies, if your circumstances change, let them know in writing and keep copies, if they think they have overpaid you due to you not telling them something they will want the cash back.

fookin typical, what is shell entitled to on maternity, once she is back to work we will be ok, it's while she is off that we are gonna struggle

My wife contact the benefits agency every month to tell them my pay because I'm on commission. It didn't make a blind bit of difference because they still stopped our working tax credit without notification even though she called every month. And they still want us to pay them back! The wife won the appeal tho :)

You need to find out what benefits she gets from her work place whilst on maternity? My Mrs was on 6months full pay 3 months half pay and then 3 months SMP.

sure when we checked you have to earning under 17k as a household. You two earn double what we do :( lol

our littl eone is nearly 11 months now, and we get child benefit it think, which is 80 a month.

our main issue is that with the current state of affairs, its pointless ceri going back out to work, as she would have to spend everything she earns on childcare :-(

I'm sure that's what we get:sad:

Ask your missus to find out if her employer does child care vouchers? You still pay a bit through TAX but do save :)

It's all a bit ridiculous now tbh, if you're not working and have kids, you get the earth, if you're working and have kids, you get fug all. Rose and I both being high earners have to be careful what we allow ourselves to get paid, because once you breach the higher tax bracket (Where everything over a certain amount is taxed at %40) they take away the child benefit too! So we literally worked it out, if my employer wants to give me a pay rise, it has to be over £52k or we actually LOSE money by getting pay rise  I have to refuse any pay rise from my employer that is more than £43k and less than £52k to prevent us LOSING money!!!! WTF!

Not to mention that we already earn more than the threshold for child and working tax credits too, so essentially I work, I earn money, I pay tax and I get erm............... NOTHING back! Not even a little bean of a token gesture. How is it fair that when I'm putting more in, I get less back?

Now I have to add I see the other side of it here, when we came back from NZ, at first I was the only one working and was earning less than you Allan, so we NEEDED and appreciated the child/working tax credits, then Rose started working they went down a bit, then we both get pay rises, then we both changed jobs, now we bring in about 8 times what we did 2 years ago, but because we get nothing back from the government at all, we're not that much better off at all, not to mention they reckon they overpaid us £4K by mistake (As Voddy said, notify them the SECOND circumstances change, in writing and keep copies) and now they want it back!!!!!!!!! Words like "Jog On!", "Whatever" and "F*** RIGHT OFF!" come to mind when that letter came through the door I can tell you!

They fight not to give you money but they LOVE taking it all back. God Damn Hippies!

Alan, you need to say you are an immigrant from say Iran, have 12 wives and 30 kids and are under the threat of 200 lashes in your home country and you will get a 7 bedroom house, millions in benefits and untold riches! I am not being racist etc or anything of the like just stating how it works in this country of ours! :( They might even throw in a Nissan Bluebird for you! (remember those!)

Didn't think that child benefit changes were implemented until next year? And even so, if the increase in nett pay between 43 and 52k is well over 4k/ year after PAYE and NI... surely you'd you'd have to have a lot of children if you would lose the same amount? Or am I missing something?

They were guestimate amounts mate, because I can't remember the limits and figures we worked out, but the limit for advanced tax is about £43-£44k and I worked out I needed to earn more than some number in the £50k's to avoid actually losing money over a pay rise. Maybe I should have made a bigger deal in my post about them being guestimates, I was busy concentrating on what I was saying though, lol. It's hard to complain about the prospect of getting a £50k salary and having to turn it down, lol.

Basically with 2 children it works out at something like, the equivalent of £8k before tax (i.e. after the tax comes off that £8k, the child benefit works out at more than your additional net income does.) Again it's a guestimate, I could go back and work it all out again I suppose, but don't see much point as I'm not due a pay rise just yet :D I'll need to when I am though.

Our 16 year old leaves school in July though, so unless she goes to college/sixth form, which I don't think she will, that will mean we have to be a little less careful about accepting pay rises, that said, you get less for the second child, so the amount we'll stop getting when she leaves school will be small.

Finally, yes I think the rules come in next year, is 12/12/2011 atm, just in case you were wondering? lol

EDIT: I've just been and looked at HM Revenue website and it seems I'm actually already in that bracket now. I missed that. NI contributions are only in the upper level if you earn a few hundred over £40k a year, tax however is at 40% above £35,001. So I'm somehow already paying 40% on some of my hard earned and I hadn't even realised it. I must have missed the budget this year or something, because last time I checked it was still £43,000 :(

EDIT: (AGAIN) I've just found something else, last year it was Over £37,400, so either I'm dyslexic and they've lowered that figure by £2,400, or I was looking at some tax figures from several years ago earlier this year, lol, either way, I now know not only am I going to get screwed, I screwed up the calculation and am already not benefiting fully from my wage :( lol
