Ask Steams, he spent the summer awake and now is half asleep permanently ;)

Have a search for my thread mate, it was called "at my wits end" or something like it. Lot's of tips in there.

My insomnia seems to come in long bouts. i.e I went for over a month with any sleep in the summer but I'm sleeping like a baby now and struggle to get up in the morning. I use zopiclone but it's very addictive.

cut out all caffeine, get more exercise, drink hot chocolate or warm milk before going to bed, with a wee dram of whisky stirred in. if you can't get to sleep, turn the light on and read until you're more tired, otherwise you get more and more frustrated and find it harder to get to sleep. put on some soothing music at a low volume - whatever takes your fancy be it whale song, a bit of LTJ Bukem, etc.

^ this is what I do when I'm feeling short on energy

Cutting the caffeine does it for me. We were just remembering today the day I bought decaff by mistake, didn't realise, emptied it into the coffee jar and we found ourselves falling asleep at our desks a few years later. We tried to continue with it, as we figured caffeine must be really bad for you, but we caved after about 2 or 3 days when we could barely even walk around the house, was bloody terrible. I should point out we cut out all caffeine, including chocolate, de-caff coca cola, etc. etc. lol

Take up painting! Apparently it's very lethargic and helps people with insomnia to sleep :)

The other option is a big fat BONG with that herbal stuff in it :)

Now according to both my missus, and worryingly Andy Isherward, I tend to snore like a hippo having a heart attack, so she uses Kalms which is a Herbal remedy:

however tesco do a home brand type version which is about half the price.... however, you did say that you didn't want to take pills, so I guess all of the above suggestions:

better diet, more structured routine including regular exercise, less artificial sugars, stay away from caffeine, sweets and fizzy drinks. Warm milk/hot chocolate or malt drinks before bed especially with a healthy slug of whisky or brandy.

As my esteemed college suggested above a fat reefer or 2 tends to have the desired effect, but can you leave you feeling fuzzy in the morning.

And my personal favourite, give her a jolly good seeing too and then let her start asking all those post coital questions like.. "what you thinking about? or how much do you love me, or describe me in 3 words?..." and trust me, you will be asleep in no time.

WARNING!!! DO NOT however, answer the 3 questions as such:

1) what you thinking about? - umm, well just thinking how long i have to wait till i can go downstairs for the aforementioned reefer and play the xbox..

2) how much do you love me? - umm, loads, but that's just cos you let me smash your back doors in.

3) describe me in 3 words? - can't be arsed.

Helpful? i doubt it.

May I encourage you NOT to take up smoking as a sleeping remedy! I have been campaigning against the devil drug for many years now. Please refer to the following website http://www.talktofrank.com/ for reference on the long term effects of using these horrible substances.

Is it ok for me to pop around after work for that 20 bag?!

Cut out any stimulants past 3-4pm, cut out your caffeine and switch to herbal tea or even water and try some relaxation exercises like yoga. I sleep much better now! :)

In all seriousness, in my old single days, if i couldn't sleep, I'd just crack one off and that always seemed to do the trick. :xxx::xxx:... seriously though, it worked!

Not sure about the caffeine as I have a whole milky coffee about 9pm most nights and doesn't bother me.

Do you have a TV in the bedroom like me and we watch this for a couple of hours then my wife drops off, I continue to watch for a bit longer until I feel tired, turn it off and I am asleep in 10 mins.

I find there is nothing worse than trying to get to sleep if you are not feeling tired

+1 Pretty much exactly what I was going to say, but I will say what was on my mind anyway so I can get it out lol. Having suffered from sleep problems, anxiety and stress in the past I know that not sleeping can just compound the issues.

In my experience cutting out tea and coffee, coke and access sugar or at least cutting down will ease anxiety that happens when you can't sleep and things are going round and round in your head. Also try getting exercise every day if you don't, even if it's a brisk walk for 45 mins or something, you may need to convert mental energy into physical. A warm malt drink can sometimes help before bed, also very quiet relaxing music can help, has to be barely noticeable though, just enough to stop your mind from wandering and not too much to keep you awake.

If you are going round in circles and getting worse don't lie their stewing, get up, read a book for a bit then go back to bed - you need to break the cycle instead of lying there going round in circles.

It will get better. Hope you get sorted soon.

Cheers,

Get a night shift job and put all those spare hours to good use ? £££

Its a phase, it will pass, **** all to do with drugs/anxiety/stress etc

Its called life. Bit like puberty really, comes to us all.

No probs mate, you can also try a night light, this might sound stupid, but pitch black sends your mind into overdrive and wandering with thoughts and images. The eyelids being slightly lit can help stop that and if you open your eyes you see something in the room that stops your mind from whiring round while pitch black. It can help to decrease anxiety when your brains in overdrive in the pitch black.

I keep a note pad by the bed if you cant switch off i find it helps to just write down whats in buzzing around in your head really helps to chill me out if i cant sleep
