MEH we had a 2001 740i 4.4 V8 the other day in work that you could have bought for £1500

They are awesome cars for the money

Where do you work?!

Depends how you drive but they are remarkably good on juice for the size and power.

Remember they weigh around 2 tons and still out perform alot of cars on the road.

My dad had an E38 95 740i for a few years did around 150k in it (bought with 30k on sold with 180k) and it fairly reliably did 24mpg over all those miles at a fast motorway cruise. Pretty good for the type of car. He replaced it with an E65 745i which does 26mpg (probably due to it being 6 speed and alot more modern!)

One thing to note though if your fancying one of those, I would watch the early 94/95 ones as they have the earlier 4.0 v8 and can be a bit touchy to fuel grade alot had replacement engines. The later 4.4 was much better and as reliable as the hills. (Having said tht dads was a 4.0 and as i said had done over 180k when it was part x'd against the 745i with not much failing in that time apart from a fuel pump at 160k!)

looks horrid and really dated :(

Lol bit like me

I had a 740 4.4 V8. I got around 20mpg around town. Not to bad.

The reason i sold it, was that i was worried how much it would cost to fix it if it broke!

looks horrid and really dated :(

Looks fantastic to me, would look better with the bodycoloured lower skirts rather than the black though.

Would'nt own one, prefer the 5series, but always liked them, great looking car. Had to strip a e38 like that once; Top quality build, the engineering makes other cars look like toys.

Love the e38 740i

As has been said, get the 4.4 not the 4.0 as its a better engine and they also put a better gearbox on the 4.4 too.

Such a nice car to drive, power, luxury, all the toys and cheaper than a zed to pick up!
