I've decided to buy myself a Blu Ray player, so was looking through all the options and whether I could justify spending the money.

Anyway I decided to buy a drive for the PC, as I have an HDMI hook up to the TV so can watch movies on the big screen. I also decided to go for a combined Blu Ray / HD DVD drive as you can often pick up cheap HD DVD's and you're getting the same quality. Then in the end I succumbed to a Blu Ray reader/writer with HD DVD read facility, which I consider the best of all worlds.

So it's all hooked up with full 1080P HD to the TV and I'm impressed so far. I've managed to obtain a few discs of my fave films so far. I've got hold of Blade Runner (Final Cut)(My fave film of all time) on HD DVD for £4.50, Dark City (My second fave film of all time) on Blu Ray for £5.50 and V For Vendetta on HD DVD for only £1.99! I wont be buying all that many as I think I can only justify buying them if I believe they are visually stunning enough to bother, especially if I already have them on DVD. I think Gladiator could very well be next on the list :D

Anyone else recommend a really good visually stunning film that is worth buying in HD? I realise that all three that I've got are quite dark films, so the HD quality doesn't show through as much as it will in Gladiator for instance.

If you have'nt seen it already, then the obvious choice would be Avatar. There probably is'nt a better demo of blueray / HD. Astonishly stunning visual clarity and detail.

agreed stunning film in hd!

i thought avatar was crap on blu ray

but to be honest, i saw it at the pics first in 3d. so it wasnt going to be as good as the cinema version really.

but on the whole blu ray films are brilliant

a good one is iron man, the colours of the suit really stand out

the dark knight and ironman, i also have bladerunner it looks so good

i thought Quantum of Solace was good on Blu-Ray, and some parts of Valkyrie. I only have 8 or so blu-rays at the moment, but pretty much all new films I buy will be on this format

old films are just up-scaled digitally to make them seem blu-ray ish, as they were filmed many moons before HD, i'd buy new films, the good ones of course if ya find any :) that way you'll get the most satisfaction and visual happiness!

Ive a bluray, and a hd-dvd xbox.i know hddvd is dead but the cheapness of the films is great, pick films from 1 pound, lol

some of my fave blurays-

pans labyrinth

sunshine

the dark night

apocalypto

stargate

Is this right? As I'd of thought that it's in the transfer from the original film reel. As the majority of movie's are filmed on celluloid and then transferred to DVD or Blu Ray I can't see how the age would make a difference. Obviously it would be down to the quality of the original.

You could be right though, I'm not sure either way :D

Some are upscaled and yes it would depend on the quality of the original film :)

Avatar

How to train your dragon (funny as hell)

Transformers 2

Dark knight

Any of the pixar films

300

Stay away from films with cheap special effects / bad CGI as Blu-ray just enhances the crapness of them and the CGI

I'm going to be getting the BTTF trilogy on blu-ray as soon as it comes out.

Another good one is Indiana jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, always appreciated.

As for Avatar I have seen it on DVD and was impressed with the quality and I'm sure it would be a lot better in HD, then I'm sure it'll be even better once they bring out a 3D version for 3D TV's (Not that I'm upgrading to one of those just yet)

I'm considering the Resident Evil films on Blu Ray.

Oh and if anyone likes these films and may be considering pre-ordering a copy of Afterlife from eBay... DON'T BOTHER!!! VERY overpriced, instead take a look on Amazon and pre-order on there, as they are currently £10 cheaper and guarantee to give you the price you pre-order at or lower!

That is a spot on film in hd the quality is spot on.

The best things you can ever watch in HD has to be the animated movies.

Pixar Car is Truly amazing. the details and colours etc

I second Pixars Cars for both sound and picture quality! I have about 200 blu rays now and you say Kung Fu Panda is one of the best :)

Well I've just splashed out on another one....... The Fifth Element on Blu Ray

One for all you Milla fans out there

According to all the write-ups this is superb on Blu Ray, especially the Remastered version. So I went for it, but it's apparently not available here in the UK  and most of the imports seem to be about £18+. I've just picked this one up from http://www.dvdworldusa.com, which is a UK based company that import US titles, for £10.99 which is fine as long as they are Region Free ones, and you can check that here.. http://regionfreemovies.com/
