Just bought a Prelude for £800 - fully loaded 2.2 VTec with full leathers, cruise control, air con, etc - nice car!

Saab turbo good and reliable ,had one for three yrs not a problem and used it as daily driver it was a 1999 yr,

Nippy and coast along the motorway all day not to bad on fuel, depends on how you drive ,me im very erratic, found it a really good all round car, and the Mrs is small and she found it easy to drive ,

A grand buys you so much these days its almost impossible to choose.

I was considering buying a car for 1k and was weighing up a few options. The idea was to sorn the zed over winter and let something else get caked in salt. I was pretty determined to get something RWD. I also looked at a few front drivers just for the sensibility of it ('06 Astra SRi Turbo).

I liked the idea of a Lexus LS400 on about a p reg. Probably upwards of 150k miles but, by all accounts, they can do inter-galactic mileage no bother. Only problem is they're a 4l V8, so pretty thirsty. Very well built tho.

There's no end of BMW's for that money but the old, old... old shape 5 series with the twin round headlamps (E36?) is meant to be a cracking car, built when BMW's were actually made of metal and not recycled biscuit tins.. Either a 525 petrol or diesel should be fun..

And then i saw you could also buy a Lexus Soarer (JZ2 Twin Turbo anyone?) for that money too. Or an old skool Toyota Supra. In the end I decided all the cars I was looking at were potential black holes, financially. So I decided I'd just borrow the girlfriend's Clio 1.2 sport (1k, coincidentally) if it got salty on the roads instead.

Lol, we considered LOTS of the above cars also!

isnt the saab turbo the car that at a rolling start in second is quicker to 70 than a porsche 911?

well im back to square one the saab was crap body wise looked at a silver zed today but it was a total shed unfortuately, tt saorer tends to be an auto so would rather have a manual car with about 200hp?

what's the missus liking / disliking? If she was up for looking at a Saab but not a MGF then its going to be difficult to guess. What's most important: driving pleasure, cost of ownership, reliability etc etc..

If you're after something 200bhp and rear wheel drive.. and manual.. then its probably gonna have to be some old bimmer 328 or similar. Or maybe a 200sx (probably a bit too expensive).

What about an mkI MX5/Eunos Roadster? Or does it need 4 seats?

Cheers

Good call.. Can you get those for a grand nowadays?:detective:

Insurance on these is shocking tho, not sure what the op's insurance rating would be - I'm old, female, max no claims, been driving ages and its still sky high for me

You can get the normal FTO for about that not so sure about the mivec one because I paid 2k for my old one. One of the best handling cars you can buy!

saw one on top gear . the aero goes from 50-70 in 2 seconds according to mr. clarkson .

And it was Mr Clarkson testing the 997 911 turbo that stated it could do 50-70mph in 1second!!! FFS!
