guys im thinking of putting together a new pc what do you think of the specs below

msi ka780G http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=KA780G&class=mb

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158562

with

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Socket AM2 2.3GHz 65W 1MB L2 Cache OEM Processor

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145171

with the cpu what should i be looking for are these over kill

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164048

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135662

As this processor comes without a heatsink, add this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/162231

Finally, some memory:

Kingston 2GB (2x1GB Kit) DDR2 533MHz/PC2-4200 Non-ECC CL4

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/64178

with regards to the memory is it better to have a faster mhz speed ie

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130666 or is this again overkill with the 4gb

will it be compatible with the hard drives im using now sata maxtor 300gb in raid

also the thermaltake case http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Chassis/desktop/mozart/vc4000_index.asp

also if any good radeon 9550 http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9550/specs.html

and a psu unit antec true power 480 http://www.kikatek.com/product_info.php?products_id=722&source=froogle

multidedia system i use it for it is hooked up to my 50"tv through the vga port i watch a lot of films through the computer using media player and also music all of the time i dont play games on the pc but im on the net a lot of the time

any suggestions or changes to the above welcome

cheers

let me check it and ill get back to you. i always build my pc and never waste cash buying a premade :-)

i'm going through the list but i always build power houses for as cheap as possible for my challenges .. hehe

having to think small is unusual for me however i am going through the list.

i think its usually easier to have a budget then decide otherwise you overspend.

My SPecs are

Antek case - 2 fans on the front, one at side, one at back and large 12cm on top. £70 (this is excessive but i use mine as a server, games machine and multitask multimedia.

Processor £70 (will edit in model later)

Dual core intel 2.4ghz. these fairly cheap processors are known for overclocking well and quite reliability. mine is overclocked to 3.0 X2 (6.0)

Motherboard

(asrock turbo twinz) £98

basically these support a newer chip for my twin g cards. normal motherboards run 1 graphics card at x16 however when you add a second (if you can) they are both bought down to x8. this motherboard runs both at X16 individually.

Graphics. (each card £120 from Nova pc)

i started off with one but i made my pc upgradeable by getting the motherboard set up first. so started off with 1x HD4850 1gb and now have my second HD4850 (1gb)

2GB graphics with the Core clocks these run really scale well for ATI. I run in Crossfire mode so both are linked and ATI also supports dual monitor in crossfire whereas Nvidia and SLI does not (YET)

Memory. (think it was 667 mhz - will edit in later)

got 2 x 2gb sticks for about £60 total special deal in PC world. you don't need that much more until you start uping the ante on your machine..

DVD reader and writer (£30

i use wndows xp (personal preference) but i use 64bit version. using xp 32bit limits memory usage to about 2.4Gb as it can't address the extra memory.... When I had two graphics cards taking 2gb. Even though I had 4gb memory I was left with 400mb from the memoery itself as windows takes away memory capacity from the cards.

XP or VISTA 64bit addresses this and so now I get 4GB memory and 2GB from the cards and it uses all of it.

Basically do not get more than 2gb or memory if you are running 32bit system. (unless it is vista as they can address a bit more) Vista ultimate can address something 256GB of memory… but no motherboard has slots for that yet :-)

It runs crysis at full settings full effects (which is a true test and the most demanding game ever) all for around £600.... after getting dual monitors more like £900 but it would be worth well over 1200 is i bought it pre made.

give me a budget and ill get you the pest multimedia pc for that price :-)

most of that stuff is getting to be quite old now but still will perform well for what you want and seems to be well priced. The intel duo's are a good bit quicker at the same clock speed but the are a good bit dearer. I've seen DDR 2 ram for £8 a gig somwhere. No real need for 4gb if you're running 32 bit vista or xp as it will usually only recognise about 3gb anyway. 800mhz ddr2 would be quicker as would lower latency ram like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Corsair-4GB-2x2GB-DDR2-800MHz-PC2-6400-XMS2-Memory_W0QQitemZ140320949985QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_ComputerComponents_MemoryRAM_JN?hash=item140320949985&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1690%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 corsair ram is usually the dogs *****x and compatible with most boards. Check the form factor of the the mobo will fit the case ie Micro atx / atx etc. Power supply should be fine for what you have there.

Unless your playing games a lot at high detail and resolution with over 30" display for games or other video/music stuff you ain't going to want a monster machine sli/xfire etc. Then again they are nice to have

if i can get it sorted the better if not it will be the new build

i already have the case, psu, sata raid 300g drives, dvd ect so im only after the motherboard, cpu, and memory :hyper:

problem with mine is the memory slots they dont work with my new memory its a msi kt8 neo2 fir board and the memory should work in slots 2 and 4 but the old memory only works in slots 1&2 the new memory wont boot up at all :headvswal

hi 8ace is the stuff from ebuyer i have seen a bit outdated? could you suggest another msi board? must have the optical spdif output :hyper:

cheers

Water cooling all the way. I went to watercooling a few years ago and havent looked back, ultra silent and ultra cool pc ftw.

It looks like an ok board but upgradability will be limited(AM2) as new amd cpu's(phenoms etc) are a different socket type but saying that ,this will always be the situation :D Does it have to be MSI? They are usually a bit more expensive. Abit are pretty good for the money as are asus boards. I have a Q9550 intel quad in my rig on an Asus p5QC(LGA 775 Will take cheaper older p4's core duo or quads, also the board does ddr2 or ddr3 ram) and the board was about £100 6 months ago.

Personnaly if i were on a budget I would go... Asus socket775..... intel core 2 duo(they can be got at a reasonable price) 3gb xms ddr2 and a nvidia 7600gt or with slightly bigger budget 8800gt(might need a bigger power supply for 8800gt) it will be pretty freekin fast for little wonga and with the right cpu and 8800gt will put a ps3 on it's arse

don't know what the amd chipsets are like but the nvidia ones are usually good which the cheaper one has..... noticed they take phenoms and are marked socket AM2+ so that's a bonus I though phenoms had a completely different pin array I've learned summit today

yep they do take phenoms which is good so the cheaper one looks a good bet means i can spend more on the cpu :hyper:

bit of a silly question what does the chipset do

my mobo was this one

http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=588

how does this compare to the asus one??

err dunno exactly but back in the olden days some brands were unstable or ran extremly slow, had issues with hardware types, driver issues etc, . intel ones are about the best nowadays for overclocking etc problems with any chipset in these times would be unlikley. I've only ever had one msi board it was freekin great and real fast for it's time. Think it was one of the neo platinum ones an old amd 64bit socket 754 it was red firetruck too like your's is. As for the Asus board you can't really go wrong with them. They are usually reasonably priced very reliable and if anything does go wrong their 2 years warranty plan is great(can take about 6 weeks to come back) I had an AN8 32sli board which decided to die about 2 years . I sent it back and had a brand new one(not always the case but mine was propper ****ed:D ) which in turn sold on ebay for a princley sum:D as I had my current board fitted as I cannot live without a games machine and was quids in with a newer board and my second quad
