rodders25 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 How can you get out of it? I have no car to get there so gotta rely on crappy public transport and where I live theres one bus god knows when. I will miss overtime at work, so will loose money and struggle to pay the bills. Must be ways of getting out of it. Quote
Darkside TT Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 i don't think you can, loosing money is not an excuse, they pay you a standard rate of about £30 per day i think. although some one may know. Quote
Guest lets drift Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 You can ask to be excused but you have to say why you wish to be excused then you just have to wait and see what they decide. Quote
m0n1xX3r Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Yep, as far as I know there's no way of getting out of it. They do give some remuneration, but it's not a great deal. Quote
rodders25 Posted November 20, 2006 Author Posted November 20, 2006 So do work pay you? If they dont and I only get £30 a day. Thats sh1t. Quote
AndyP Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 You can usually wangle your way out of it the first time, but if you try it twice there is little hope. Quote

takemetothepub Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 1. When the Bailiff calls out "All rise!" stand up, click your heels, and shout "Ja wohl!" 2. Inform the judge that the £30 a day stipend is insufficient, and you will be billing the court at your usual consultation rate. 3. Bring your teddy bear, Mr. Cuddles, to the courtroom with you. When other people speak, say "Mr. Cuddles can't hear you!" 4. When questioned, persistently blame everything on freemasonry. 5. Dress Mr. Cuddles in a tiny John Birch Society T-shirt. 6. Address any female attorneys as "Foxy Mama." Quote
Yampiedog Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 They will pay travelling as well however you could always swear blind that you know the defendants but I doubt they will believe you know them all! Quote

rodders25 Posted November 20, 2006 Author Posted November 20, 2006 Its prob not a bad thing to do, prob interesting. But I need overtime to pay for house and I dont wanna sit on a bus for an hour and a half every day! Quote
Yampiedog Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 It can be very interesting especially if you get a decent trial. Anyway a list of what you can claim for. http://www.cjsonline.gov.uk/juror/expenses/index.html Quote
Guest Saz Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 i used to be a crown court clerk and it can be VERY interesting!!wish i could do it, but i know too much about the system now so not a chance. Yeah you could say that you recognise one of the defendants to be honest most trials dont run over a couple of days unless your unlucky one fraud case i sat in on went on for months there was that much evidence. Funkysi Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 So do work pay you? If they dont and I only get £30 a day. Thats sh1t. Your company will still pay you as they have an obligation to. Plus you'll get £30 extra a day plus travelling expenses...least that's what I heard. Quote
HeXaKing Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 You could get your company to write a letter saying that they are going through tough times and you are an important person dealing with matters that only you can do, then you might get off, i did ?. Quote

I've got out of it twice ;) There is nobody else to pay my salary if I'm not working (and they refused to pay my daily rate  ) Steve :) Quote '93 UK TT Manual [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

edk83 Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 depends on your company. our pay us a normal days wage but we have to get an offical form from the court etc Quote
RichardS Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Your company will still pay you as they have an obligation to. Plus you'll get £30 extra a day plus travelling expenses...least that's what I heard. It depends on your company policy. Legally your employer only has to pay you for 4 weeks annual leave or statutory sick pay after the 1st 3 days of an illness. Any other absence and there is no legal obligation for your employer to pay anything unless your employment contract says otherwise. Most contracts nowadays specify that sickness, jury service etc are "at the employer's discretion." You can get out of it. Just get your employer to write the court a letter saying they can't release you; this will either postpone it for a short time or indefinately as they may never ask again. I got called up 15 years ago, I put it off about 5 times then I had to give them a date I could make. Loved doing it though - really interesting!
